Coming off a huge skim season finishing 2nd on the Skim USA Tour and 9th on the United Skim Tour, Mason Broussard is not slowing down! After over a month of couch skimming the East Coast leg of the skim tour, he headed back to California to handle some unfinished skate business.
Mason had taken a break from a game of SKATE tournament hosted by Lighthouse Skate Shop in Santa Barbara, California to finish the skim season while his SKATE competitors and organizers patiently awaited his return. And boy was it worth the wait! Mason pretty much brushed the sand off his toes, stepped off the plane in California and proceeded to initiate it on his skateboard. Not only did he win, but he caught the attention on the internet with a heated two hour semi-final comeback battle that many are saying is the best game of SKATE they have ever seen! Combo that with a part in Angel Hernandez’s “Jokes Over” video (featured here on Thrasher Magazine) and Mason is pretty much the cream of the crop right now. He’s got that fire and it’s really rad to watch!
We caught up with Mason to see how he feels about it all:
ZAP: Congrats on a sick season, Mason! Tell us a bit about the skate side of things after an awesome skim season!
Mason: Thank you! I’m feeling tired after a long skim season but happy to be skating after focusing on skimming most of the year! The games of SKATE have been played at Skater's Point Skatepark in Santa Barbara, CA and had 64 competitors in the event. Stoked to clutch first place out in the skate event after skating against a lot of great talent!
ZAP: That’s super dope! You killed it. Are all the competitors local or what?
Mason: The competitors are all based out of the Santa Barbra/Ventura area and Lighthouse Skate Shop is located in Santa Barbara. So yeah, locals. The level of talent around here is INSANE.
ZAP: You have a part in a new skate video on Thrasher, yeah? What’s it called? Tell us a bit about it!
Mason: My friend Angel Hernandez has been filming a full length street skating video for the past year with friends from all around America (CA, NC, LA MA, AL & more). It’s called “Joke’s Over” and it’s dope! He filmed it in that old school VX style of skate videos and it came out so good. Check it out now!
ZAP: That’s so rad! Congrats on that. Making it on Thrasher is a big deal for sure. Again, we’re hyped on the season you had and looking forward to seeing what you do in 2025!
Mason: Thank you! I was stoked to come out to a lot of skim contests this year! After finally recovering from a knee injury a couple years ago and taking a break from the tours, I wanted to come to the gulf coast to start the season up at PCB and ended up getting 1st place. I had some motivation to do most of the tour this year!!! Very excited on ending up (2nd place in Skim USA Tour and 9th place in United Skim Tour). Looking forward to 2025, I plan on resting, preparing for next year's tours, and working on finishing some skate parts with some different friends out here in SoCal! All good things!
