EVENT RECAP| Zap Pro/Am World Championship of Skimboarding - Finals Day & Podiums

Words: Max Smetts // Photos: @devindmedia
The 42nd Annual Zap World Championships took place this past weekend in Dewey Beach. For one of the most anticipated events of the summer, the event did not disappoint.. In total, there was over 200 riders that entered to contest which made it the largest event of the summer. Every year the event continues to grow and it’s a testament to the skim community in Dewey Beach and all the hard work that Jason Wilson and the team at Skim USA put in. It takes a lot of work to put together these events and we can’t thank all the volunteers, sponsors, riders, and skim parents that make it all possible.
The competition kicked off on Friday with very windy conditions from tropical storm Debbie. Once the weekend hit, the conditions shaped up very nicely and we had beautiful weather. There was solid 2’-3’ swell that graced the competitors all weekend and provided the platform for a lot of action!
In the Amateur divisions, there were plenty of stand out riders that deserve recognition! We will start with the young guns and the largest division in terms of number of riders (28) with the Menehune division. Zap Team Rider Giorgio Tomasi took the win by charging bigger waves and landing technical tricks. It was a tightly contest heat with the other riders finishing closely behind Giorgio. In the Women’s Division, Zap Team Rider Kate Warrington took third place in her first trip to Dewey Beach from Florida. She was shredding all weekend and had a tightly contested Final heat. In the Men’s Division, Zap Team Rider Graham Shelton finished 3rd after a tight battle in the Finals with Finn Forcucci and Sammy DiEmidio.
One of the biggest standout riders from the weekend was Zap Team rider ET Beaugrand. First, he took the Win in the Sr. Mens division and followed up by winning the Semi Pro division as well. He had the choice to make to either stay Amateur or go Pro… He decided to go Pro and it is well deserved! We’re stoked for ET and he has a bright future ahead of him.
Moving to the Pro’s, there was many many tightly contested heats that were all separated by less than a point. In the Women’s Pro, Alex Yokley lost by 0.3 points to Chabe White in the final and finished in 2nd Place. Sydney Pizza rounded out the podium with a very solid 4th place finish. In the Men’s Pro, Lucas Fink ousted Dane Cameron in the final with very strong skimboarding all weekend. Zap Team Rider Sam McCoy finished in fourth and was killing it all weekend!
Thank you for everyone that came out this past weekend! It was a lot of fun and we look forward to the Florida Pro/Am taking place this weekend at Vilano Beach, FL. Look forward to seeing you there.
