The 2018 OBX Skim Jam was a big hit this year for the Zap team. We were graced with awesome conditions all weekend and the thunderstorms managed to avoid us for the better part of the weekend. There was an awesome turn out for the event as the contest sold out completely and there were no spots available for any beach entries. It is always great to see new faces at these contests and there was definitely a lot more people coming out this year.
Coming into the weekend I had a feeling that something good was going to happen and by the time Sunday rolled around I was correct. The Men’s Professional division was stacked and John Akerman stood out all weekend. He was throwing some crazy tech out to the wave and off the lip that really propelled him to the top spot. His teammate Sam McCoy was nipping at his heels and was keeping up with his tech game the whole weekend but barely got beat in the final with John. We are super stoked for these two as they are always a threat to win at any event. In the Women’s Professional division Casey Kiernan took the win. She has really progressed her skimboarding this off season and was using a lot of power and tech to stand out. Fellow team rider Ellen Wood took the 2nd place and was no slouch either. She is always in contention and is really fun to watch!
It was great to see everyone and we can’t wait for the Zap Pro/Am coming up in a few weeks in Dewey Beach!
